Colleen & David’s wedding day was one I had been looking forward to since the moment they booked me. I had always wanted to photograph a Latin Mass and this was my first chance to do so and I couldn’t wait. I drove down to the small town of Freeport, Illinois to celebrate the day with Colleen & David in the parish Colleen grew up attending. It was a hot day in an old church but everyone was ready to forget the heat and celebrate joyfully with this amazing couple. I felt like I photographed a fairytale love story… the church, her dress, the palpable connection between Colleen and David… le sigh. I loved this day for so many reasons, as a wedding photographer you meet so many people and are invited into very personal moments on a day that will be one of the most remembered in a families lives. I met Colleen for the very first time on her wedding day and immediately felt her warmth and kindness and not only from her but from ALL of her friends and family. I’m basically ready to be adopted by this group of people! One of my favorite moments from the day was watching her 7 brothers dance will each of her sisters on the dance floor. This family was just so much fun!
I asked Colleen and David to share about their favorite bits:
David told Colleen: When I kissed you up on the altar and when we were saying our vows and when I dipped you at the end of the first dance song… The mother son song… all of it.
Colleen says: Seeing David when I came up the aisle – I couldn’t see anything else really, the vows, his eyes…Seeing him dance with my little siblings, staying by my side the whole night, our first dance, my Dad walking me down and first seeing him when I walked in the church (he caught his breath and tears stopped) and when my dad handed me off to David… Sparklers, and speeches- dancing and mother/son dance and dancing with my dad broke my heart a little.
Tell me why the Latin Mass for your wedding day?
We thought it would be different and so special and everybody deserved something beautiful like a Latin Mass that day. It draws us in more to the sacrament and the reverence of it all. Colleen went for about 12 years to this parish and Mass while she went with her family to Rockford when they first moved out to Illinois 19 years ago. It holds great family memories.
This text from David right after they exchanged notes to each other… I mean I was literally wiping away tears (and sweat, ha ha) all day long!
This was the view I had immediately upon meeting David in his hotel room with all 7 of Colleen’s brothers, David’s 3 brothers & his other groomsmen and nephews. It was a mosh pit of tuxedo’s and cufflinks. Thankfully, one of the younger guys was there to teach all these guys how to fold a handkerchief!
Colleen’s sister Mary scribbled down a few notes before her maid of honor speech… and I kind of love these kind of wedding day details!
Thank you so very much to have me be the photographer to tell your story!
