I went on vacation during wedding season… and I’m a wedding photographer!
Door County is my happy place and my favorite place to vacation with my family. I’ve written about the importance of balancing family time and work time especially as a work at home parent. It can be difficult for me to prioritize my family time during the summer, it is my busiest time of year. I worked my butt off the weeks before the trip staying up into the early morning hours editing so I was caught up 100% with client work before we left. Am I the only person who can’t leave home and truly ‘let go’ when I have the pile of work waiting for me? Geez, I hope not. I did checked my email a few times during the week and I did bring my computer with the intention to do a few pet projects but ended up going to bed early and waking up early and drinking coffee on a porch swing instead. BOOM, yes I did. Coffee on a porch swing… pretty sure that’s the official definition of relaxing if you look it up.
Why Door County is perfect for our family?
This is our third year back to Ephriam, WI in Door County. I fell in love with this place the second we crossed into the county in 2014. It is such a perfect place for our family lifestyle. Remember how we visited Disney World this past spring? If not, you can find that post here. We did have so much fun in the magical world of Disney but it was not very relaxing. We were hustling, watching, chasing, waiting in long lines… Door County is the opposite sort of vacation. Everything is slow and relaxing… well as relaxing as it gets with four small kids. The kids are satisfied playing at the beach and looking forward to a nightly ice cream. My idea of fun is campfires and board games.
Driving through the small towns and country side of the beautiful peninsula is so refreshing with not a chain restaurant or store for miles. I love the unique atmosphere and road side stops sprinkled from town to town.
We spent every.single.day at the beach at least for a few hours. It was bliss. The house we stayed at had this perfect private little beach and kayaks. I didn’t have to police Gus for wrecking the sandcastles of complete strangers or scan the crowds and count to four 375 times an hour as I pick my crew out of the many. I.AM.SPOILED.FOR.LIFE.
We did a bit of hiking at The Ridges Sanctuary it was perfect for our kids and has a great nature center we love visiting. We also visited the big waves on the Lake Michigan side of the county. The kids thought they were swimming in the ocean. Bonus, no salt!
We were so glad our good friends and their family came up with us. It was great to have bocce ball teams and board game night with them. Also, adding in and extra 5 people to our always fun ‘What Time Is It Mister Fox?’ games was a highlight around the campfire.
Sam was up and down these stairs about 100 times.
This porch swing was heaven. I need one of these in my life someday. We soaked it up on this beautiful little porch. Greta and I read our current favorite, Nancy Drew.
This little guy is the sweetest little bocce player around.
The towns are so fun to just walk around and grab and ice cream too. I already picked out the yacht I want to buy should I ever win the lottery. I’ll be honest… we walked down the pier with the kids to look at the beautiful boats and we had to drag Gus away, literally kicking and screaming. He wanted to ride on one of those boats so bad. Parenting fail.
Greta took a few photos too… I love this little photo bomb I did here.
until next year Door County… much love me and my wild party of six.
