I photographed sweet Madison’s newborn photos last year and was so blessed to have met this family. Samantha contacted me a few months ago to take Maddie’s one year & family photos and we were all set to go. When I messaged her to confirm a few days before our session, she had such a surprise for me… and for herself! She found out she was expecting baby #4 that morning and thought the photo session would be a perfect time to tell Ryan the big news. We bounced a few ideas around and settled on a nice card. I was so glad to be a part of not only documenting Maddie’s first year photos but also the joy of adding a new little one to the family.
We wandered around the gardens and found a place to let the boys run and Samantha found a bench to give Ryan his ‘birthday’ card. He was shocked to say the least! After letting the news settle in we headed for some ice cream at Michael’s to celebrate Maddie’s first year and baby #4!
Me: How incredibly shocked were you to find out you were expecting… and did you think Ryan would be just as surprised!?!
Samantha: Yes he was shocked to say the least. This was an unplanned surprise for each of us. There is a saying that I’ve seen a few times “we planned 3 but couldn’t see God planned 4 so we are having one more.”
Me: After the shock wore off a bit, how excited were you all… what about your boys have you told them?
Samantha: I cried pretty hard the next day…having 4 young children so close is hard! But then we found out that morning of Maddie’s 1st Birthday about a family tragedy and I quickly realized what a blessing we were given! That this little life is a precious gift. The boys LOVE the new baby already. They came to the ultrasound and were so excited to see the little fluttering heart beat. They are super understanding of momma getting so tired at the end of the day too.
Me: Tell me a bit about sweet Maddie… she is one and not going to be the baby anymore! How was her first year & what is she up to now… her expression after eating that ice cream… priceless
Samantha: Her first year was full of challenges with breastfeeding and eventually moving to exclusively donor milk. We made it a year though! The boys love Maddie and want the new baby to be a girl too. So that Maddie has a sister. Chris talks about how he is going to be a triple big brother now. And Jak is excited to be a double big brother. Maddie has been a joy for the most part this last year. She sleeps well, on her own, in her own bed. Which the boys never did till they were almost 2.
We call her our little princess. She loves pretty things. Hair bows, sparkly shoes, girly dresses. She picks out her clothes and pjs now. She will tell you want she wants and scream if she doesn’t get it. She loves her chocolate and sweets- we try and limit them of course but she sure does love to eat!
She has the most beautiful smile and loves to smile at everyone. She gets all the grumpy old men and ladies at the grocery store smiling and giggling. She is also funny and knows how to make you laugh.
As a mother of 4 children myself, this photo is my favorite. Kids in every direction but joy… so much joy.
Maddie stealing her brothers ice cream… YES GIRL!! We share a heart.
