Have you visited Playa Del Carmen, Mexico with Little Kids before?
If not I highly suggest you do! I’ve been know to book vacations at 3 am after a late night editing session before, ahem… Disney World… this time I did it again but I booked the trip for Puerto Rico. Of course Maria happened and my heart broke for all of those people as they were hit with such a devastating hurricane. We had to make a quick change of plans and decided Playa Del Carmen, Mexico was a great alternative. Oh my gosh, I did not expect to fall in love with this beautiful city like I did!
Traveling with four little kids is not easy but we were so lucky to have found the best condo to rent! For our family, all inclusive style vacations are not practical at this time. I like having a lot of space to spread out and let the kids relax so we need multiple rooms. I also like having the ability to cook even while on vacation. I am easily overwhelmed in restaurants with my kids and I am always afraid I’ll lose one, especially the boys! So for me, having a private home experience where my kids can grab some snacks and cereal without me worrying if they are bothering others… AND while I can still be in PJ’s drinking coffee as black and strong as I like it is my preferred choice to travel. I am able to relax so much more when I’m not always counting the heads of my children in public for each and every meal. Plus, I’m an adventurer at heart and love wondering around and seeing the world!
I booked a condo that was two blocks from both the grocery market in one direction and a Super Walmart in the other direction. Our kids LOVED coming to get groceries and I LOVED that my husband made me fresh chorizo eggs and carnitas with warm off the grill tortilla’s on our roof top bar and patio while the kids swam in our private wading pool! This condo was beyond perfect and completely walkable to the beach and all of the fun in downtown Playa.
Ice Cream every day on 5th avenue!
And the view wasn’t bad either! We watched the school children go to school in the mornings at the school next door, we heard the daily church bells and even attended Sunday Mass together. Turns out, Sam was not interested in hanging out in Spanish Mass so I headed out to the courtyard with the other Mom’s of unruly children where he played and chased around and made new friends.
Across the street from our condo were the best street taco’s we could find and we stopped at many! Why can’t street taco’s be a thing in my home town? I don’t think we would ever cook dinner again.
And then just another short walk across from a bus station, we found a hole in the wall restaurant, El Doctorcito . They had ceviche and fried fish taco’s. There was a DJ spinning 90’s hip-hop, which is and automatic ‘win’ in my restaurant review book! Scot loves spice food… like reeeaaally loves it. Where ever we go, he asks for the spiciest salsa or dish on the menu. Naturally, he did so at this restaurant as well. The chef brought him his own personal favorite and was shocked when my husband spooned it on his taco without hesitation. EVERYONE was so kind and welcoming to our crazy family.
The condo complex also had a larger pool for everyone to use but is was just us there too.
We had some rainy hours, so we hunkered down at home and watched some good old fashion Netflix. All the kids went to their rooms and watched their own shows! I’m not sure if you know this but Netflix is pronounced HEAVEN on rainy days with kids in Mexico. Scot, Callie and I also enjoyed catching up on Stranger Things, season 2 after the kids went to bed.
Our little pool was three foot deep with a long bench around two sides so Sam was able to walk around just fine too.
Thank goodness for Callie, who was an extra set of hands helping us out with the kids the entire time too. I credit her for making this vacation go as smoothly as it did!
It was truly wonderful taking the kids to the ocean for the very first time.
Ocean waves and salt in my hair. Yes. Every time. Yes.
We loved Playa Del Carmen so much and loved visiting Valladolid, Ek Balam, and the cenote. If you want to see more from our vacation to Playa Del Carmen, Mexico with Little Kids be sure to follow my blog to keep up with highlights!
